**Prologue: The Relic’s Journey**

The shard was not born, nor was it built. It had grown.

In the earliest cosmos cycles, when stars were still young, and galaxies curled like smoke, the Architect shaped structures not to conquer, but to listen. They believed the universe itself was alive, not a cold void of inert matter, but a vast organism that whispered truths through gravity, through resonance, through silence. The relic was one of their listening stones, crystallized fragments tuned to the hidden frequencies between dimensions—a bridge between thought and matter.

For millennia, it pulsed in quiet harmony within a lattice of towers hovering over the black heart of a dying star, each shard resonating with energy, mapping out patterns of cosmic breath. Together, they formed a gateway, a lattice that could thin out the veil between the known and unknown galaxies and the deeper ocean beyond. A chilling cold seeped into his bones as an unseen thing filled the air, and every hair on James’s body stood on end. The Architects’ choice of “Dominion” sent a shiver down the spine, a silent promise of inescapable control. It was the weight of fear that could bend civilizations to its will. To contain it, the Architects shattered their lattice, scattering it into the void, each one carrying a fragment of a song to parts unknown.

The shard Elara found had drifted for eons, carried into the ruins of the Ophir Relay, where human explorers, unaware of its danger, embedded it into their communications array, thinking it was a fragment of alien technology that could amplify signals. For centuries, it slept there patiently, whispering faintly to the data in the ship; no one thought to survey it.

The shard remained abandoned until scavengers like Kaelen crossed its path and pulled it from the wreckage of half-forgotten wars after Ophir collapsed. Unlike others before him, he kept it. Perhaps it sensed him. The Dominion certainly did.

Now, with Elara’s crew, its glow outshone that of a star. Each piece vibrated with the others. They spanned vast galaxies. They were ready to rebuild the complex lattice. The completion of the lattice triggered the reopening of The Gate, not because of humanity’s decisions, but because the cosmos remembered.
